[Alternate title: Venemous bitch!]
Ann Coulter, that is. Though it’s no longer “new” news, Ann Coulter is in hot water over some offensive comments she made last Friday at the 34th Conservative Political Action Conference.
Here’s what she says:
I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate, John Edwards, but it turns out that you have to go into rehab if you use the word “faggot,” so I’m – so, kind of at an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards, so I think I’ll just conclude here and take your questions.
During a question-and-answer session, Coulter referred back to the issue of gays by alluding to the bid for the Republican presidential nomination being made by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
“I do want to point out one thing that has been driving me crazy with the media — how they keep describing Mitt Romney’s position as being pro-gays, and that’s going to upset the right wingers,” she said. “Well, you know, screw you! I’m not anti-gay. We’re against gay marriage. I don’t want gays to be discriminated against.”
She added, “I don’t know why all gays aren’t Republican. I think we have the pro-gay positions, which is anti-crime and for tax cuts. Gays make a lot of money and they’re victims of crime. No, they are! They should be with us.”
I’ve have heard that Coulter has tried to explain the comment as playground taunting. She’s 45 years old. Didn’t playground taunting end…I don’t know…like 33 years ago for her? Even if that’s what it was, this is politics – not an elementary school playground.
Of course, the Republicans have, en masse, decried Ms. Coulter’s comments. Of course, they were all in attendance at the conference. Of them, the only one who I even remotely believe is Rudy Guiliani since he has consistently supported gay rights.
Ann Coulter, on the other hand, is a weird right wing nut with a history of insulting people in the name of conservatism and a history of abrasive rabble-rousing.
As for the Republicans – notably the those who have thrown their hat in the ring for the 2008 presidential race – you’re looking foolish. The Republican party paid Ms. Coulter to speak. Mitt Romney introduced her.
Plus, to those in attendance who claim to have been shocked and appalled by Ms. Coulter’s comments, watch the video. Watch and listen closely. In particular, listen to the laughter and the applause after she makes the offending remark. Here’s a link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx9Bi3C4rs8. No one appears appalled and offended. The room erupts in applause and laughter. Show me the video of someone being appalled.
Let’s be clear. The Republicans paid her for her comments. She is a notable public face of the Republican party. They hired her for her opinions and her comments. Now that they are embarrassed because their true feelings have been aired to the world, they want to disassociate themselves from her.
For my part, when the Republicans point to “family values,” “traditional marriage,” “best interest of the children,” etc. as reasons for opposing same-sex marriage and other same-sex rights, I will know what they’re really thinking is “What makes those faggots think they’re entitled to that?” And that’s what they’re really thinking.
On the other hand, perhaps Ms. Coulter was simply possessed by the devil:
